To get married or form a civil partnership in England or Wales, you both need to:

After your wedding or civil partnership ceremony, the signed paperwork entered onto the digitised system of the General Register Office. You can then apply for your marriage or civil partnership certificate, which officially records your union.

What is a Statutory Wedding Ceremony?

How to do the legal bit

Choose where to do it!

This ceremony does not have to take place at your local register office. It can be held at any register office with availability to conduct a statutory ceremony. Every registration district is required to offer statutory wedding ceremonies (this just means the most basic of ceremonies). However, these are usually held at off-peak times and are rarely advertised. They also book up quickly, so make sure you don’t leave booking until the last minute. The cost is approximately £70.

You will need to know where the ceremony is taking place before you can proceed with the next stage…

Notice of Marriage

Everyone has to give Notice of Marriage, regardless of the type of wedding ceremony they are having (except for some faith weddings). Both of you need to give notice at your local register office. If you're unsure of which area this is, it will be the local authority to which you pay your council tax. This must be done in person and at least 28 days before your wedding. The fee is approximately £42 each (for British nationals).

You will be required to present very specific identification. Please read the email sent to you when booking your appointment, as the documents required may vary depending on your nationality, date of birth, and marital status.

Your Marriage Schedule

After 28 days, a marriage schedule will be generated. This is the document you will sign when you legally marry.

At the Legal Ceremony

The legal ceremony requires you both to speak aloud specific phrases - one declaring that you are free to marry, and the other contracting the marriage. These are repeated after the registrar but must be said correctly, or you will be asked to repeat the sentences. After this, you will sign the marriage schedule, along with two witnesses and the registrars present.

The marriage schedule is now an A4 piece of paper. You no longer sign the traditional marriage register book (this applies to all weddings, not just statutory ceremonies). The schedule will then be entered into the registration office’s electronic system, and a marriage certificate will be dispatched to you.

You are NOT required to exchange rings, dress up, or bring family members with you.

What’s Next?

The pressure is off! You are now legally married. This means you can enjoy a stress-free, rule-free, friendly wedding ceremony alongside your celebrant and your nearest and dearest.

While a wedding celebrant can create a beautiful ceremony, it’s essential to note that they can’t legally marry you. Here’s a simple process to follow:

Statutory Ceremony: You can have a statutory ceremony at any registry office, just the two of you and two witnesses. This service is typically priced at around £60. All register offices are obliged to offer this option, but it isn’t always advertised on their websites. Sometimes, you’ll need to contact the office directly to book one.

Timing: Completing this statutory ceremony means that by your wedding day, you will already be legally married. If you prefer, you can even do this part after your celebratory wedding ceremony with the celebrant!

By taking care of the legalities ahead of time, you can fully enjoy your wedding day without any legal worries. PLUS they’ll be no registrar interviews on the day, no strange faces at the end of the aisle and you’ll know exactly what to expect.

Have an informal chat: by phone, WhatsApp, Zoom or in person. It’s a great indicator of whether you gel with that particular celebrant and whether they can be your ‘person’ one of the biggest days of your life. It could be worth checking their experience, their knowledge of your venue, have they worked with your other suppliers before, do they have excellent reviews, what are their payment terms and do you like their vibe.

The getting to know you: different celebrants work in different ways but I love getting to meet and know my couples. Along with these conversations, I use a couple’s questionnaire to extract just a little more about your personalities and preferences.

Script time: your celebrant will draft a personalised ceremony script tailored to you, including vows, readings, and music selections. This can be discussed, altered and changed until you are 100% happy.

Rehearsal: If you’d like, a rehearsal can be arranged to ensure everyone knows their roles. This step can help ease any pre-wedding jitters!

London Wedding Celebrant

Recently, I had the joy of visiting a stunning London venue to officiated a wedding ceremony for a cosmopolitan couple. Let me tell you, it was an experience to remember! With high ceilings, rough plastered walls, and bare floorboards, the space was sooooo chic. It was just THE perfect location for this couple to hold their wedding.

Not only did the venue compliment the couple’s love story but it was centrally located. Some for bride's family had traveled from across the Atlantic to celebrate their wedding day, leaving behind sunny skies for a stylish, albeit rainy, London wedding. The wedding guests were such a lovely group and their happiness flooded the room. This energy made the celebration even more memorable. They certainly raised the roof when the couple were introduced as Mr and Mrs!

As a wedding celebrant, covering Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and London, I know how important it is to find the right setting for your wedding day. Why I love a Sunflower...

As you may already know, I’m Sharon, a wedding celebrant operating in Bedfordshire and the rest of the UK. Setting up a business raises the tricky task of choosing a name I should operate under. Oh my goodness, that took a while! After tossing back and forth a number of ideas I settled on Sunflower Ceremonies – in tribute to my favourite flower.

With the farm’s beautiful gardens were still very green & with rich colours in every corner.
